Day 217: May 3, 2025 – Puerto Quetzal, Guatemala
My expectations for the Guatemalan Port of Quetzal were low. The port was in an industrial part of town, not in a spot usually frequented by visitors. But a 2.5-hour drive north brought me to the town of Antigua, which turned out to be a lovely surprise. It’s a vibrant, colorful city and a UNESCO world heritage site.
Over the centuries, this location has been the site of numerous earthquakes that damaged much of the city. The ruins of Antigua Cathedral, whose roof was completely blown off in a 1773 earthquake, were hauntingly beautiful.

The iconic location is a favorite for weddings and wedding photo shoots. Three photographers, all dressed in black, were shooting this couple amongst the ruins.

The first pix ( perspective with arches) is excellent. I think it’s hard to get such an angle. You also caught the light so well.
Yes I was really struck by those arches, they were beautiful. It’s one that I would have enlarged.
My favorite place in Central America; glad you got to visit and that you captured it so beautifully 😍
So glad you ventured out to find this little gem of a city surrounded by volcanoes. As always, your photography is supurb — many of the photos look like paintings. Seeing all of these wonderful places you’re visiting through your eyes is a real treat. Thank you for sharing your adventures with all of us!
