Day 279: July 4, 2025 – Ketchikan, Alaska, USA
The Odyssey celebrated Cinco de Mayo in Mexico, and Canada Day in Canada. So it’s only right that we swing by the US to celebrate the 4th of July. The small Alaskan town of Ketchikan (population 8,192) turned out in full force for its parade. We had a prime spot for parade viewing; docking right in the center of town, on the parade route.

Various classes from the town’s past had their own floats. My favorite was Class of 1985: “We had spirit, pep and drive. Now we’re just happy to be alive!”
Yeah, I hear ya…same…

The evening ended with fireworks at 11:00 PM. (It doesn’t get dark in Alaska until then.) The Odyssey arranged for us to anchor nearby for a great view of the display.

I love these parade pics!
Love the last picture of the town with the water image!
I would imagine that this was even better than FW over the East River in 2008 or 2009? I’ve seen many over the years, but the one I always recall this time of the year were those in Frank Gemme set off in his backyard in Los Angeles in 1976, He finished them by saying he would get even more next year.
Nothing will top fireworks in NYC. That is hilarious, that you remember that about Frank Gemme. I’ll have to forward that memory to his daughter Abigail!
I lived in Washington.. that was going to be my question… What time did they start fireworks??? Lolol
Can’t wait to see what’s next!
Yeah, they have to start pretty late. I think when I lived in Juneau they didn’t start until after midnight.
Can you imagine? Waiting till midnight… I can’t… Lol
