Skagway Can-Can

Day 285: July 10, 2025 – Skagway, Alaska, USA

At our Skagway stop, we took in a bit of Alaska history at the The Days of ’98 Show. Set in 1898 during the height of Alaska’s gold rush, the vaudeville musical was full of bawdy humor and high-stepping can-can dancers. The show has been a Skagway tradition for over 100 years, since 1923.

The Can-Can girls

The audience was invited to participate in the can-can dance. I joined fellow Odyssian Chris G. (that’s us in the middle) as can-can wannabes. As you can see, I need a bit more practice to be up there with the professionals.

You mentioned the Alaska Gold rush. Reminded of when I lived in Colorado and the Alaska pipeline workers would make lots of money building the pipeline. They would return to their home in Colorado on their days off. Then some workers would spend most or all of their Alaska pipeline money. Then they would return to Alaska to make lots more money on the pipeline.

    1. Yeah, that was another kind of “gold rush.” I remember you spent some time in Alaska too, Sharon.
