South Korea

Day 337: August 31, 2025 – Jeju Island, South Korea

Brand new country added to my list: South Korea! Our port stop was in Jeju-do, an island off the southern coast of South Korea.

Jeju Island, South Korea

Jeju is all about volcanoes. The island was formed as part of a volcanic eruption and many volcanic remnants remain. The two lava caves (caves formed in volcanic rock) I visited were part of a 10-mile lava-tube system.

Hallim Park was a tranquil garden, filled with palms, wildflowers, bonsai trees, volcanic stones and other rock formations, including some collected from the Amazon. Unfortunately, it rained the entire hour I was there, making for a very soggy visit. On the plus side, the rain made the rock formations really glisten!

The Jusangjeolli Lava Cliffs formed when molten lava erupted into the Jungmun sea and cooled suddenly.

Glad you are out and about and feeling human again. XX Those are the biggest bonsai I have ever seen! They must be so very old.

So are those rock sculptures natural formation or where they sculpted? Tea in Korea –I didn’t know.

    1. I was trying to figure that out too. I think the ones that are volcanic (they are kind of rough, not the smooth glassy ones) are natural formations. I think the others that are smooth are those brought over from South America, and my guess is they were natural formations also, but I haven’t been able to verify that.

  4. Basia, as always, great pics! Thank you for allowing me to experience a part of the world I may never see myself.

    1. Thanks Margret.

I would love to see that – to experience the feeling you must’ve had of being inside the Earth. The pattern and grain of the rock is mesmerizing to me. The rain didn’t stop you from getting great pictures.

    1. Patterns are always fascinating to me too!

  7. What extraordinary pictures of a unique island!

  9. Cool seeing the same hexagonal columns of basalt lava as at Giant’s Causeway, somewhere else in the world. Love the rock formations! Nature’s statuary. Also enjoyed the tea plantation view. What an awesome island!

    1. Yes, a number of people compared it to Giant’s Causeway.

  10. Magnificent

    1. Ha. Pneumonia did, for a while there!
