Toilet Restaurant

Day 353: September 16, 2025 – Taipei, Taiwan

“Toilet” is usually not a word you want associated with a restaurant. Except here in Taipei, which celebrates everything poop-themed with a restaurant called Modern Toilet. Customers sit on toilets while dining, with bowls of shiny brown turds artfully placed under their food. Turd cushions adorn the sofas.

Embracing my inner turd cushion.

On the menu: Pee Drinks, Toilet Meals, Toilet Hot Pot, and Poo Bread.

There is even a faux bathtub you can jump into.

The food wasn’t shitty 😆 and the serving size was enormous. I had a waffle with mango, and in addition to the waffle and mango, it came with ice cream, whipped cream, Oreo cookies, two other kinds of cookies, chocolate sprinkles, and jelly. My strawberry shake was served in a urinal.

The real (functional) bathroom stayed in character with this hand-washing sink.

I suppose it could be worse. It could be Primitive Toilet-themed rather than Modern.

My fascination with toilets seems to be a pattern. Here is a blog I did 15 years ago on toilet seat art in Texas, called Every Toilet Tells a Story. (This link goes to an old blog platform that is no longer supported, so it may be wonky, but all the text and pictures are viewable).

  1. It is!

  2. Thanks for the link to “Every Toilet Tells a Story”. What a delightful person Mr. Smith was! I read that he died in 2019, and his entire collection of toilet seats is now carefully preserved and presented in an “art museum” in The Colony,Texas (a subburb of Dallas). The new museum is owned and operated by a company called Truck Yard.

Well………………….. I think I would have said “No, Thank You to this junket. Too many reflexes kicking in. Was it also stinky?

    1. No, it wasn’t stinky at all. In fact, it had a very bright, cheerful, clean feel to it – kind of a Disney vibe. It would be a big hit with kids at Disney (thought of course, not exactly on their brand).

  4. Haha. Have you consulted a professional about this obsession?

    1. I should. Do we have a professional on board who does this kind of work?

I don’t know, a restaurant without a toilet seems problematic. I mean, sometimes you just need it…

    1. Restaurant, yes. Restaurant name, not so much.
