Into Indonesia

Day 376: October 11, 2025 – Ternate, Indonesia

At Ternate, a small island city and our first stop in Indonesia, the people were the main attraction. Warm, friendly smiles, everyone open to having their picture taken, as curious about us as we were about them.

A family at Sulamadaha Beach

These three girls were enjoying chatting with our group.

The public market was filled with all kinds of dried fish, including these which looked like they might be sardines.

This little gaggle of children followed me around the market. At one point I abruptly turned around and pointed the camera at them, which sent them into giggles. That’s my shipmate Tim shooting the scene from behind.

  1. When Jane Anne and I were children, our parents subscribed to National Geographic magazine. I used to look forward to the new issues and “discovering” the world through the photos and stories. I’ve spent a couple of months reading your blog from the beginning to understand your entire journey! What a fabulous adventure! I’m looking forward to this 2nd year.

    1. Hi Rosemary, happy to hear you are on here. I was a big fan of National Geographic too, it’s likely what inspired me to travel.
