Day 430: December 4, 2025 – Savusavu, Fiji

In Savusavu Fiji, 50 of us had the pleasure of spending an evening around a bonfire with the residents of the small village of Nacekoro.

They provided the bonfire and a yummy meal. We brought the S’more fixings (and by “we” I mean Cyndi G, who coordinated this event) and demonstrated how to make them.

The meal included fish, chicken, two taro dishes (a root vegetable similar to potato), pasta, pineapples, watermelon, papaya and fresh fruit juice.

I love this photo of me toasting my marshmallow, captured by my shipmate Patti-Jo. The lighting, the clouds, the full moon captured the essence of the evening.

We’ve done quite a few village tours all around the world, so sometimes I feel myself growing jaded about them. But for some reason I felt a lovely connection with this one. It felt more organic; they seemed to genuinely welcome us and were ever so gracious. Our tour guide later told us this was the first time this particular village had hosted tourists. So perhaps they too, haven’t become jaded with tourists yet.
