Day 762 (25 months): October 27, 2026 – Sihanoukville, Cambodia
As all of you have seen in the news by now, this week our Odyssey journey came to a halt in Cambodia. Villa Vie suspended operations and we were directed to disembark in the port of Sihanoukville. It was not completely unexpected; we had been hearing rumblings of financial instability and mismanagement for a while now, and no doubt there are many reasons for its failure, including soaring fuel costs. For that, I put the blame squarely on the lunatic running our country, who picked a fight and jacked up fuel prices. I also blame everyone who voted for him and enabled this behavior. So if you’re one of those people, thanks for killing our dreams!
We are now scrambling to figure out our Plan B. I am deeply disappointed; I was not ready for it to end this way. But I don’t have regrets; 2+ years of cruising the world and 50+ countries have made this an unparalleled adventure. One small glimmer of hope: there is a chance that the cruise may be restructured as a resident-run venture. But those plans are still in the very early stages so it may be months before anything happens.
My travels will continue, with or without the ship. Two places still on my bucket list are China and Mongolia. I am checking into doing some tours in that part of the world. But for now, I wait.
