Uber Moto

Day 150: February 26, 2025 – Santos (Sao Paulo), Brazil



I had tried Uber Moto (Uber via motorcycle) once before, in Buenos Aires, and got a kick out of it, so I decided to give it another try in Santos, Brazil. It was a bit bumpier–I might have left a few claw marks on the driver’s shoulders! He treated stop signs as suggestions and a couple times my legs were getting awfully intimate with the wheels of trucks next to us. But overall, a fine adrenaline rush for under a buck!

Buenos Aires (where we were last week) is known for their motochorros, professional motorcycle thieves who snatch iPhones from pedestrians, so the thought did cross my mind that this could be an invitation to phone theft. But I decided to throw caution to the wind and all was well!

    Ugh Basia, I cringed when I saw this. I have travelled extensively around the world on many continents and extensively in developing countries. I can’t tell you how many truly regrettable motorcycle accidents I have seen as well as the lasting after effects of those who have been in those accidents and survived them. I very much admire your zest for life and your adventuresome spirit. But I hope you will rethink using motorcycle transport again even though it may be cheap and can maneuver around bad traffic. Putting yourself in the hands of a young kamikaze who takes risks to save 3 minutes, and with all the cars who still don’t look out for motorcycles, is not worth the risk to your skin, your ability to continue traveling and even walking (and of course having your lungs directly exposed to all the car exhaust around you is also not good). Sorry to be a downer on the topic but I hope you will decide to choose a regular Uber in future.
