There is a spot in Iguazu called The Triple Frontier, where 3 countries meet: Argentina, Brazil, and Paraguay. It made me wonder whether I could add another country to my life list. But in spite of this landmark location, it wasn’t easy getting into Paraguay.
After our full day of zip lining and the ice bar, we were chatting with the taxi driver taking us home, when we found out he would be willing to take us over the border. Two borders actually, since we had to go through Brazil to get into Paraguay. It was about an hour ride into the border town of Ciudad Del Este, then we spent an hour doing a quick tour of the city.
Right after we crossed into Paraguay, our driver excitedly pointed out a billboard for KFC. So Beverly had the idea to treat him to a KFC meal. That’s how we ended up eating Kentucky Fried Chicken with an Argentinian taxi driver on our 1-hour jaunt into another country.
On the way back, going over the Friendship Bridge and waiting for immigration, we ran into the TRAFFIC JAM FROM HELL. I have lived in Los Angeles and in New York City, and I’ve never seen anything this bad. It took us over 3 hours to go just a couple miles, crawling slowly alongside hundreds of cars and trucks, until it finally let up after passport check. It seems that it’s a routine occurrence here; lots of Argentinians come to Paraguay to shop, especially for brand-name knockoffs.
It was worth it going through the traffic jam from hell, to add country #49 to my list!
