Among the Ruins

Turkey is rich in history. It has the remnants of many of the world’s civilizations. But I’ve never had much affection for history. It was always my least favorite subject in school. The eras and empires get all jumbled in my head, and even after listening to a very thorough historical narrative from a tour guide, I couldn’t tell you which sultan did what or in what era.

But even a non-history buff like me can’t help but be awed by the ruins scattered throughout the country. As one of our tour guides said, “The people of Turkey simply carry on their lives amidst the ruins.” Here are a few scenes from two of the most well-known ancient cities, Hierapolis and Ephesus.

Not one of you thought to bring an umbrella? An umbrella has many uses, it can also be a sun shade or a cold wind/breeze protector. 🙂 If you have a sturdy full-sized one it is a walking aid as when going over rough uneven ground. Also, a weapon for fending off a small gang of kids that would like to pick your pockets. Or birds or monkeys that would like to snatch your lunch. So for me, it is an essential when traveling. 🙂

    1. We don’t need no stinkin’ umbrellas…!! 🙂 🙂 (But appreciate the tips, Hazel!)

  2. Superbly done.

    1. Thank you, fellow traveling companion!

The weather made for some gorgeous photos. I’m glad you are exploring Turkey outside Istanbul. Looking forward to seeing more.

    1. Yes, I love the way rain and overcast skies bring out beatiful shadows.
