Bird Island

Day 490: February 2, 2026 – Bird Island, Ha’apai, Tonga

I’m a sucker for any place called Bird Island. (And there seem to be many of them around the world!) The one in Tonga did not disappoint. A one-hour boat ride from our resort brought us to a small island that was a scene out of Hitchcock’s The Birds.

At least 8 different species included noddys, terns, frigatebirds, boobys, and plovers.

  1. Wow – looks almost like Galapagos. Fabulous. Were they unafraid of humans?

  2. Loved seeing all the birds… but the crab totally stole the show! 🙂

The diversity of species you saw is incredible! The crab photo was such a fun twist – it’s easy to overlook creatures like that, but it really added something special to the post!

Blue-billed White and Black-naped Terns are so pretty, but I have to say….
