If you’re a birder, Ecuador is the place to be. On my last visit to Ecuador in May, I added 100 lifers (new birds) to my bird list. On this visit, five days in the Andean cloudforest gave me another 117. Here is a gallery of my best shots.

Besides the number and the colors, I especially like the names. Cryptic Becard sounds vaguely like an epithet, for example.
Lol, yes it does, doesn’t it. I’m intrigued by some of the bird names too.
Basia, how do you keep track of which birds you have already documented. What is your total? Happy New Year.
Hi Tereska, it’s all done online, on a site called eBird. On this trip, we had a birding guide, and he entered the names into eBird and then shared the list with us. When I’m birding by myself, I enter them into eBird myself, and it keeps track of everything. My list currently has 1081 species. It seems like a lot, but there are over 10,000 species, so I have another 9,000 to go!
First of all… Incredible shots. Secondly… Wow… So many amazingly beautiful, unique creatures. I always wonder how there is so many different kinds of birds. They are just beautiful!!

Unbelievable! That’s a total of almost as many as I have on my life list of 20 years. And beautiful portraits, as always.
It’s crazy! I had 620 on my life list when I left Rochester, now I’m at 1081, so I almost doubled it in one year.
Truly paradise! Thank you for sharing these wonderful pictures with us!
You’re very welcome, I love having so many people enjoy them with me!

Those really colorful ones almost seem like they’re painted on. Especially those vivid green ones. But no, they are all very real.
WOW well done, good on ye.
