Cotton Castles

Early on in the planning stages of this trip, someone (I think it might have been you, Lisa Johnson?) posted on FB a stunning photo of the travertine pools of Pamukalle, and I was hooked. I decided then and there, if I was going to see anything in Turkey, it would be this.

The Turkish name Pamukalle translates to Cotton Castles, a reference to the puffy white deposits that cling to the side of a ridge. What looks like brilliant white snow is actually limestone calcium carbonate deposits. They surround a series of turquoise thermal pools. One can walk into the pools, but only with bare feet so as not to damage the deposits. The rock is sharp and slippery, so walking was a bit treacherous. But oh what gorgeousness…

In spite of the cancellation of your 3 yr. trip you are getting in a lot of adventures already – and more to come and thanks for included “us” backseaters.

    1. Yep, definitely trying to make that lemonade! Happy to have you backseaters along!

What a grand adventure you’re having! My mom visited and loved Turkey. I found her photos of the travertine pools of Kamukalle to be extraordinarily beautiful! 🩵

    1. The pools are just stunning. I’ve heard they are not quite as beautiful as they used to be – for a while there, the water was being diverted to hotel pools – but they still looked stunning to me.

  5. You enjoy it all.
