Faces of the World: Barbados

Day 43: November 14, 2024 – Bridgetown, Barbados

I was strolling through Queen’s Park in Barbados, snapping pictures of Bananaquits, when a group of 14-15 year-old schoolkids surrounded me and asked to try out my camera. When I told them I was taking pictures of birds, they started pointing out birds for me to photograph.

I especially love the young girl on the left, who is pantomiming holding a camera and clicking.

Their teacher, Mary Jane, asked me to take a group photo and send it to them. So this entry is dedicated to this gaggle of youngsters who gave me a memorable Caribbean moment, and now represent Barbados in my Faces of the World gallery.

Next stop: Grenada

When I went to Africa, The children were most amazed at my camera and wanted to see themselves right after. I was pretty deep in the bush and realized, many of these children had no idea what they looked like. I wish so i had one of those instant photo cameras with me so I could have left images for them as there was no way to send anything back.

Wow, I’m sure that’s the kind of day that makes your whole trip worthwhile. What a great experience.

  4. Wonderful portraits!

  5. Really heart warming prose and photos 📸. Thank you so much 💓

  6. I’m interested in their artistically sculpted hairdos. Their expressions are revealing too. Some are eager to connect, others wary or bashful. Good shots. They will surely remember the curious lady with the longest camera they’ve ever seen.
