Faces of the World: Kosovo

Continuing my Faces of the World series, this street vendor was selling cabbage on the streets of Prizren in Kosovo. The cabbage will be made into rasojit, a juice popular in the Balkans, made of fermented cabbage and salt that is believed to aid in digestion. It seems to be an acquired taste; my guide told me when he gives the juice to his American clients, they usually spit it out. I love sauerkraut (and fermented foods in general) so I wanted to try it, but apparently it was not in season. The cabbage in this wagon will require several weeks of fermentation and will be ready in time for Christmas.

Oh I want some. Cabbage juice is high in vitamin C, but unlike OJ, it does not result in a blood sugar spike when drunk first thing in the morning. I’ll take one.

  2. I want to try it! Wonder if it’s like pickle juice (they had this in Cappadocia)?

    1. It should be ready for you by Christmas. I like pickle juice too (and also pickles).

  3. Love the Faces Theme !!!!!

Count me in the “spit it out” camp, I’m pretty certain!

    1. Ha ha ha Larry. I take it you’re not a fan of fermented food/drink?
