Faces of the World: Peru

I was standing in Cuzco in front of a street vendor cart selling tamales, trying to figure out whether it was safe to eat street food, and wondering what was inside them. I was hoping they were green corn tamales, which I love, and not meat, a frequent ingredient.

As if he’d read my mind, a voice next to me said in English: “You should try one. They’re very good.” I turned to see a father and daughter duo, paying for their own tamales. He kindly translated my question to the vendor, who confirmed she did indeed have corn tamales.

Then I had a brief but charming conversation with this random stranger. And the corn tamales were indeed delicious. So representing Peru is Brian and his daughter Maya. They were born and raised in Peru, and he works for Celebrity Cruises, so it seems he’s pretty adept at striking up friendly conversations with strangers.
