It’s worth staying at The Merchants House in Cairnryan, Scotland, just to experience the host, Fiona.
I booked a night there because it was reasonably close to where I would be disembarking from the Belfast to Scotland ferry. Fiona texted me to ask what time I would be arriving and how I was getting from the ferry. I texted back saying I would either walk or take a taxi or Uber, depending on how far away it was.
I imagine when she read that, she rolled her eyes at the city girl who thinks she can flag down a taxi or Uber in a village with a population of 141. She politely texted back that there were no taxis or Ubers, that getting one to come out from the nearest town would be expensive, and that she would pick me up in her red Nissan. I think that might be the first time a Bed & Breakfast host has volunteered to personally pick me up, at no extra charge.
In the car, I was telling her about my plan to head to Glasgow next, almost 100 miles north of here. She says: “I will be going to Glasgow on Tuesday, I can take you there if you’d like.” And no, she wasn’t interested in me paying for that either. I gladly accepted, so off to Glasgow we will go on Tuesday!
This morning, she prepares a breakfast that is hearty enough to fill me up for the day. (I had to ask her to scale down the serving size for tomorrow!) I tell her I’m going to take the bus to a birding hot spot about six miles from here. “What time do you want me to drop you off?” she asks. It seems that my every wish is her command…
I’ve stayed at a lot of Bed & Breakfasts over the years, and she’s definitely hostess with the mostest. She will be a fond memory of Scotland in the Faces of the World gallery.
