Find Penguins

Find Penguins: that was the mantra for many of us on this cruise to Antarctica. We did see quite a few penguins in Antarctic waters. But they weren’t posing nicely on icebergs; they were bobbing in and out of the water, skipping around and diving for food. So I ended up with a lot of penguin butt pictures.

But on the way back from Antarctica, I did an excursion to the El Pedral Penguin Rookery in Patagonia. Birding heaven! Thousands of Magellanic Penguins, doing their daily 45-minute trek across a rocky beach to the water. My life is now complete—I have seen penguins march to the sea!

We were warned that on the trail, penguins have the right way. They walked alongside us and seemed mostly oblivious to us paparazzis.

I was surprised to learn that penguin families live in burrows underneath the brush.

    1. There is definitely a lot of life pulsing out here in South America. It’s my first visit to the continent and I am impressed.

Very cool. I think they even have a choreographer. How long do they live?

    1. They live 15-20 years, some more. And yes, the march really looked like it was choreographed, it was so deliberate. Just amazing.

  3. Wonderful photos as always, Basia. So glad you got to see these.

    1. One species of penguin done, six more to see! 🙂

    2. Thanks Judy. I knew you would enjoy these pics.

  4. Shots right out of National Geographic. What terrific expressions they have!

    1. Aren’t they delightful? They made me think of little old men as they slowly marched along the trail.
