I didn’t know much about Kosovo before I came here, other than that it has a history of ethnic tension. (Serbia, of which it was a part, still does not recognize it as its own country. ) What I did not expect was to see so much glitter and glitz. The town of Prizren had block after block of fashionable mannequins sporting glittery Kosovo wedding clothing, ball gowns, gold & silver jewelry, even children’s fashions.
And interspersed with the high fashion, were the butcher shops, displaying their own kind of glory.

Jest kapusta i jest kielbasa, a wiec bedzie bigos.
Maybe this is the start of the wedding season. Or could it be like going from MA to NH to get cheaper booze. Maybe tailoring is cheaper in Kosovo and shoppers from neighboring countries make a gown run. Beautiful in either case. I have some placemats from Kosovo and patterns and beadwork have a similar feel to the gold and black gowns.
“kapust i kielbasa” – yes, there was plenty of both! 🙂
OH wow how I love those glitzy dresses absolutely fabulous
They are pretty spectacular, aren’t they.
Sweet memories!
Indeed.
Loving the juxtaposition of glam and gustatorial glee.
Oh! “Gustatorial glee”! I like that alliteration…
Fascinating…who would have thought!.
Carry on brave traveler…
Basha, you really have a talent for zeroing in on the essence of each place you visit. Each posting/photograph whets my appetite for more and I eagerly anticipate your next educational lesson.
Thanks Monica. Coming from a pro travel writer, that is high praise indeed!
