Key lime pie is on the menu at every Key West eatery, and many claim to have the best version. Mary and I are both key lime pie fans, so we set off on a mission to taste-test the key lime pies of Key West. We managed to get through 5, before we decided we would be ok with never seeing key lime pie ever again. Here they are, ranked in order of my preference. (Mary’s ranking was slightly different, but we were mostly in agreement.)
#1: From Key Lime Pie Bakery
Just the right amount of limeness, silky, not too sweet
#2: From Mrs. Mac’s Kitchen, Key Largo
#3: From Banana Cafe
#4: From Two Friends
A bit too heavy on the whipped cream
#5: From Porky’s Bayside, Marathon
This one was called fried key lime, though it didn’t taste any different than the others. It got our Best Presentation Award.
Some trivia I learned about key lime pie: I always thought key lime pie was supposed to be green, because, green limes. But it turns out that authentic pies are cream-colored, taking their color from the egg yolks. Green pies are usually the result of food coloring. Key limes are different from the bright green Persian limes found in most grocery stores.

Always accepting new members! Now that the sugar rush from those 5 has left my system, I’m ready for more!
Looks delicious!
They were!
When we were in New York, it was cheesecake. When we were in Mexico, it was carnitas, in Bar Harbor, it was any berry pie, and in Florida, it was key lime pie, in Vegas it’s the bloody Marys. When you’re with Mary, half the trip is pursuit of local, delicious dishes and drinks. Glad you had fun without me, but I am sure there’s some pie waiting for me in the fridge?
Uh oh. Was that pie in the fridge meant for you? Oh dear. 🙂
I love your posts! And Key Lime Pie. Thanks for the test results. Hope your resistance to Key Lime Pie doesn’t last a lifetime. 🙂
photo wise number one is the best looking
It is pretty, isn’t it.
Your adventure may have decreased your desire for key limes pies, but it’s had the completely opposite effect on me!
Ha ha. Come on down to FL and join the fun!
That sounds like a fun adventure. My cousin used to live in Key Weat – I’ll have to share your results with him !
I’ll be curious to hear what their favorite was!
