Day 533: March 17, 2026 – Tasmania, Australia

The only thing I knew about Tasmania was that it was home to the Tasmanian Devil. Just as I felt compelled to find a canary in the Canary Islands, my visit to Tasmania would be incomplete without seeing a Tasmanian Devil. I was hoping I would spot one while out bird watching in the wild. It’s probably best I didn’t, because after seeing them at the Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary, I would not want to cross paths with one in the wild. I’m told they don’t normally attack humans unless provoked, but they sure looked ferocious.

The sanctuary is also home to dozens of kangaroos. Several times while I was there, on some trigger known only to them, a dozen would suddenly stampede from one end of the sanctuary to the other. A stampede of hoppers is a comical sight to behold. It made me think of a potato sack race.

Did you have time to explore Hobart at all? I could live there.

    1. A little bit. We were here for two and a half days. That gave me time for the wildlife sanctuary, the botanical gardens, and a walk through the central business district. Could have used a bit more time to get up to Mt. Wellington.

Even his eyes look very aggressive. I didn’t know there were so many marsupials around. Not pet material that’s for sure.

    1. Lots of marsupials down under!
