Now that I’ve crawled out from that sinkhole that opened up underneath our feet and swallowed 3 years worth of dreams, I’m finally shaking off the decision paralysis and slowly evolving my Plan B.
I’ll be heading back to the U.S. later this week. I’ll get in another country or two before I leave Europe, starting with neighboring Bulgaria. Then it’s on to Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, to reclaim the boxes I shipped there for the cruise, and to spend a few weeks with some lovely new friends. (We’re not quite ready to let go of each other yet!) Then on January 6 I’ll be heading to Buenos Aires to join a few others from our group for a short (2 week) cruise to Antarctica. It’s not quite the cruise of my dreams, but it’s a start. Beyond that, things are kind of murky. I may stick around South America for a while, since that’s a continent I haven’t explored much.
Right now, just putting one foot in front of the other and patching together the mosaic that will be my Plan B.

Brazil! nice. I’m getting a flavor for Brazil right at home, if you recall our housemate Gilce.
Yes, I will definitely think of her when I’m there!
Was hoping you would go to Antarctica. Need to cross that last continent off your bucket list!
Absolutely!
Plan B sounds like a plan! Looking forward to more of your posts, especially through Antarctica
Basia, those plans sound great! My sister gets around a bit (works for Lufthansa) and LOVES Buenos Aires.
Enjoy Bulgaria! I am not sure I know anyone who is been there, so I am looking forward to your posts!
Yeah, Bulgaria is not exactly a top tourist destination. But there is plenty to see and do.
Since you’re going to be in Buenos Aires, I highly recommend spending some time in Uruguay. We did a bicycle trip up the coast a few years ago, almost to the border of Brazil. It’s a beautiful area, and Montevideo was a city worth spending a couple of days in. Uruguay also has an evolving wine region that was a pleasure to visit, although of course it doesn’t hold a candle to some of the better-known areas like Mendoza. The people there are also really great. I recall reading an article in the Times years ago about a hitchhiker who was picked up on his way into Montevideo, only to discover that his driver was the president of the country on the way into his office. It’s that kind of place, and there’s less corruption and emphasis on religion than other countries in South America, which appealed to us.
Thanks for the tips!
Awe Basia- I can only imagine what you are planning right now ! I know it’ll be as grand as it can be! Look forward to hearing about it !
