My Kind Of Place

I was staying in another BnB in Copacabana, Bolivia, when I noticed this building that looked like a seashell, with quirky other buildings behind it. The complex is part of the Hostal Las Olas (The Waves), a boutique hotel high up in the hills above Lake Titicaca. I love staying at unique places, so I immediately had to check it out, and quickly decided to switch lodgings.

Each architecturally unique building houses one or more suites or cabins. This floating cabin holds up to 9 people.

This is my adobe suite. As soon as I walked in, I felt at home.

Inside is a spacious, circular room with a dome ceiling and stained glass windows overlooking the lake. A “matrimonial” bed (that’s what double beds are called here) is in an alcove at one end, and a mini kitchenette at the other end. A seating area with couch and table overlooks the lake. All for $21 USD per night.

And the best part? A miniature fireplace. It gets cold here at 12,000 ft elevation, so I took full advantage of it.

This is one of the staff helping me start up my fire.

The second best thing? It comes with 4 alpacas who roam freely around the complex. They park themselves on the stairs, peer into my windows, and blow kisses into my ear if I get close.

I’m told the only thing they don’t like is to have their butt touched from behind; they’ll kick if you try to do that.

All the rooms have a gorgeous view of the lake.

I absolutely adore this place. If only it was 12,000 feet lower, someplace with a little more oxygen, I might be tempted to move in permanently. If I ever win the lottery and get that beach house in the Outer Banks, this is the kind of place I want to live in.

The Las Olas website gives more information about how this magnificent architectural project was built and its mission. It’s in Spanish but you should see an option for an English translation. I noticed the online prices are slightly higher than what I paid; I probably got a discount because I was a walk-in and a room happened to be available.

What great find! It reminds me of a place we stayed recently during our travels in Costa Rica. Website here – we stayed in the house with the oropendola nests decorating the outside walls. https://maps.app.goo.gl/CV2fov71qTN4AJ2w9?g_st=ic

    1. I’ll have to check it out if I’m ever in that neck of the woods!
