My Seasickness Arsenal

Day 38: November 9, 2024 – Day 3 of 7-day Transatlantic Crossing

My first-ever cruise was a transatlantic crossing that brought our family from Poland to America when I was young. My memory of that voyage is that pretty much everyone on board was walking around with barf bags. I’m guessing stabilizer technology has improved since then.

For my next 3 cruises, I wore sea bands and did not get sick, including in the rough seas of Drake Passage to Antarctica. So far on this trip, the seas have been fairly calm, although there have been a few rough patches, including one day when we had dishes crashing to the floor in the dining room. That day I had mild nausea; my sea bands seemed to help. The second time was much worse; I was up most of the night with severe nausea, even though I was wearing sea bands.

When I mentioned this to others onboard, several people immediately offered remedies, including ginger, a Relief Band, dramamine, and other meds. Thanks to Gary M, Kathy B, Hazel, and Marti, I now have an arsenal of remedies to choose from.

Today we are on day 3 of our 7-day transatlantic crossing, where some rough seas are expected. I’ve been using a combination of the Relief Band and ginger chews, and so far haven’t been sick. The sea has been a bit choppy at times—carrying a bowl of soup from buffet to table is sometimes a challenge. But if it stays like this for the remainder of the crossing, I’ll be a happy camper.

Hang in there. That has to be a challenge. I don’t suppose staying in bed helps…
    Thanks again for sharing.

    1. It does help some, especially since from my bed I can see the horizon, which also helps.

And the ship’s doctor might have some Zofran (generic name is ondansetron) if you need more help. The tablets dissolve under your tongue so can get into your body even if you are throwing up. I’m an ER doc and have given Zofran to countless patients with good results. I considered signing up to be the ship’s doctor once on a trip to Antarctica but was afraid that I might the the sickest one on board.

    1. Yes, I think the ship med center has meclizine available.

ginger is great for migraines too. I have been told that we (parents and me) also suffered during the transatlantic to the US, even though we had first class tickets (only because they were the only ones left) I (4 at the time) was rushed out of the movie theater showing mickey mouse because I was going to be sick. easy does it Basia

    1. I didn’t know that about your crossing, Tereska!

Almost half way thru it- hang in there and be glad you do have a bed to retreat to. And a trash can next to it. So glad others have jumped in to be of assistance to you.

    1. So far, still good!
