Outrunning a Typhoon

Day 342: September 5, 2025 – Hososhima, Japan

En route from Kagoshima to Hososhima, we got word that typhoon #15, Peipah, was developing nearby. Rather than getting caught in the storm, our captain made the decision to try to stay ahead of it, and by gunning at full speed we arrived at our next port 12 hours ahead of schedule. He was also able to snag a last-minute berth at the port (not always easy to get!) and we spent the night safely in harbor.

Our phones were pinging with emergency alerts about landslides, wind, flooding and evacuation orders. It was a bit of a wild night, but we were safe in the pier. I love listening to rain at night, so it was fun watching the downpour and lightning from my cabin window.

Hososhima put on a lively farewell show for us when it was time to sail away.

What an honor to have that performance for your ship and what gracious people the Japanese are! I would love to have seen the storm from the ship too – like you did. We out ran a hurricane on the coast of Croatia a few years back – in a much smaller ship. Amazing that the Captains can determine that that’s the safest strategy, but they know water and storms like no one else.

I love falling asleep to thunder and rain. In fact, I put on an all night sound video of said sounds. Tell your captain from me , thank you for keeping my cousin safe from stormy weather!

    1. It’s a very soothing sound, isn’t it.

Weather !!! Glad you are safe and how nice of them to entertain you to send you off.

    1. A lot of the ports in Japan are doing that. The ones in Mexico did too.
