Saving the Bees

Day 221: May 7, 2025 – Huatulco, Mexico

While docked in Huatulco, Mexico today, a swarm of bees decided they too wanted to make the Odyssey their home. Thousands of them gathered into a giant hive on our swimming pool deck.

Local authorities recommended exterminating them with insecticide, but the bee-lovers on board would have none of that. Resident Cyndi G, who has experience with bee-handling, coaxed the queen bee into a box, without using any protective gear. Once the queen was in the box, the rest of her entourage followed. Several other residents teamed up to help with the containment effort. The Huatulco Fire Department then took the box off the ship, hopefully to re-home them with some local beekeepers.

Cyndi is now known as the Bee Whisperer, and the Odyssey is doing its bit to save the bees!
