Day 293: July 18, 2025 – College Fjord, Prince William Sound, Alaska, USA
And the glaciers just keep coming. This morning, we made our way through College Fjord in Prince William Sound. The expedition leaders who named the glaciers were funded by Ivy League colleges, so they named the glaciers after elite colleges, earning them the nickname Smartest Glaciers in the World. Reminiscent of a 1970s college mixer, the boys (Harvard, Yale, Amherst, Dartmouth) are on one side, girls (Wellesley, Vassar, Bryn Mawr, Smith) on the other. Rumor has it that Princeton was deliberately snubbed.

Glaucous-winged gulls soared above the glaciers.

Knew the area of College Fjords, but never heard that each glacier was named for an Ivy League college. Makes perfect sense, just never had that fact pointed out before. Thanks for sharing the missing link! 🙂
Caught the Harbor Seal at the perfect moment. Also great views of the Glaucous-winged Gull. Lifer?
I lived in Juneau for two years, back in 2015-2016, so the Glaucous-winged was already on my life list.
Fascinating info!!!
