Day 11: October 13, 2024 – Portimão, Portugal
One of my earliest memories of Poland is of storks nesting in the chimneys in my grandparents’ village. They’ve always had a special place in my heart.
So I almost squealed with delight when I stepped off the ship in Portimão, Portugal, and spotted an enormous stork nest with two White Storks on it. Then another. And another. They were everywhere, perched on any tall structure overlooking the sea, a phalanx (that’s what a group of storks is called) of half a dozen soaring high up in the clouds. I didn’t have to go far for today’s birding!
Oh yeah, I did manage to capture a few other pictures in this lovely little seaside town, that weren’t of storks. 🙂
That’s our ship, Odyssey, in the background, right side:
Next stop: Cadiz, Spain

I cant begin to imagine the bird poo! Pigeons is bad enough.
Ha ha I actually didn’t see much bird poo with them, but the nests were very high up, so perhaps it’s well hidden!
Storked ♥️
That sounds like it could be a very useful word. 🙂
Focus
So you must ascertain that the bociany are” Sami Swoi”; no wiesz nasi z Podlasia. Find a disco polo music and take it to where the bociany are. “Bedzie Zabawa” might be a good first choice, but any disco polo will do. See if the bociany start to dance. But beware if Warszawiak albo Warszawianka hear you play the music, they might roll their eyes and make snarky remarks.
Prawdopodobnie nie były nasze. Nie mówili po polsku. 🙂
They were just probably recovering from the migration flight for the winter from northern Europe to southern Europe. Polski jezyk will come back to them next spring on the flight back.
I’ll go with that theory!
great pictures!!!!!! Love the Stork flying!
They look so beautiful and graceful in flight.
Wonderful photos of the storks. I love them!
Wonderful photos of the storks. I love them!
I knew you would love them, Judy.
Such wonderful pictures! We have a stork pair in my village in Germany – but multiples…that’s just wild!
That’s the first time I’ve seen that many flying all at once.
Great pics!!! Especially the wing to wing stork pic!!! What a capture!!
That’s my favorite too. They looked like they were doing a synchronized dance.
Wonderful
I noticed that the one stork was banded. That must have been an experience for the handler! 🙂
Love the tiled exterior of the one home!
Yeah I wouldn’t want to be banding these guys!
