Day 292: July 17, 2025 – At Sea, Alaska
Birthdays on board are customized affairs. Some people request that everyone dress in the birthday person’s favorite color; others opt for tuxedos. Some get roasted; others serenaded in the iconic style of Marilyn Monroe’s “Happy Birthday Mr. President.” Still others (that would be me) have Polka Parties.
Our friend Beena is a fashionista; she and her husband Satpal never pass up a chance to dress up in their finest Indian wear. So for her 70th birthday, Beverly and I dressed in elegant dresses that Beena had previously gifted to us. In fact, my whole outfit is Beena – the dress, scarf, silver necklace, and bindi. We’re calling ourselves the Three Queen Bs: Beverly, Beena, Basia.
When the birthday photos were shared on our internal chat group, one of our shipmates wrote:
“If this photo is leaked to the press, that women on the Odyssey who are in their 70s can look like this, that is all the marketing that we need. Boom, done, mike drop! Our ship is clearly the fountain of youth!” –Shirene

So there must be a birthday celebration at least once a week, right? Great way to pass the time.
Yes! In fact we have one day coming up this week, when we have two birthdays on the same day. So yes, almost every day is a birthday.
