On this day (May 31) in 1911, the ocean liner Titanic departed Belfast, where she was built, for Southampton, where it would pick up its first passengers. Four days after setting off on its maiden voyage, it struck an iceberg and sank. Its tragic history is preserved and commemorated with a thoughful and very comprehensive museum in the heart of Belfast.
Almost all of us cruisers visited the museum, and it was a sobering experience. The parallels to the journey we are about to begin—same week, same place—are just a bit disconcerting. I’m reframing it as facing the ghosts of the Titanic head on!

That museum and the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum are the two most captivating museums I’ve visited in the last 10 years. Also looking forward to the World War II museum in New Orleans, that is supposed to be amazing.
