  • Sea Lions

From our port in Ushuaia (South America’s southernmost city) I did a catamaran excursion along Patagonia’s Beagle Channel. This colony of South American sea lions was on the (aptly named) Sea Lion Island.

  • Sail Away

More than 2 months after the planned launch date, I am finally on a cruise. Not the 3-year cruise of my dreams, but a shorter drive-by to Antarctica. A group of us cruise castaways boarded the Celebrity Cruise ship Eclipse for a two-week tour. I will have only sporadic internet access during the cruise, so blog posts will be delayed.

  • My Favorite Niece

One of the most disappointing things about the cruise being cancelled was that I was so looking forward to having my niece Chrissy join me for the Antarctica segment. She had already purchased her flight ticket, so when the cruise was cancelled, she decided to stick with her plans and come to Buenos Aires with friends. One of the baby gauchos was an impressive co-leader on…

  • Ghost Stories

I’ve never had to pay an admission fee to a cemetery, but the La Recoleta Cemetery in Buenos Aires is not your typical cemetery; it’s one of Argentina’s top attractions. Built like a miniature city, it has 4691 above-ground vaults and mausoleums, containing the remains of 19th century Argentinian leaders. Each vault has an intricate door or gate, expressing the style and interests of the family. One vault (below) contains the remains of Argentina’s former first lady, Eva Peron of Evita/Don’t Cry For Me Argentina fame. The vault…

  • Argentine Tango

When people think of Argentina, they immediately think tango. Tango theater is everywhere in Buenos Aires, where the genre began. At the Tango Porteño theater, my travel companions and I took in a show that was full of kicks, splits, and sizzle.
