I’ve never had to pay an admission fee to a cemetery, but the La Recoleta Cemetery in Buenos Aires is not your typical cemetery; it’s one of Argentina’s top attractions. Built like a miniature city, it has 4691 above-ground vaults and mausoleums, containing the remains of 19th century Argentinian leaders. Each vault has an intricate door or gate, expressing the style and interests of the family.
One vault (below) contains the remains of Argentina’s former first lady, Eva Peron of Evita/Don’t Cry For Me Argentina fame. The vault is adorned daily with fresh flowers by her admirers.
The cemetery is considered one of the most haunted places in Buenos Aires and generates many a ghost story. A local visitor invited us to participate in commemorating one of those stories by tying wisps of paper to the vault for a young girl.

I Googled an aerial view for another perspective. When Basia says , “built like a miniature city”, she isn’t kidding! 🙂
