Days 514-517: February 26 to March 1 – Auckland, New Zealand
I arrived in New Zealand in 1992 for a 2-year postdoc at the University of Auckland. It was easy to fall in love with this country, as well as with so many of the gracious, friendly people I got to know here. With Odyssey’s arrival in New Zealand, I had the opportunity to revisit my old stompin’ grounds. I hopped on a 4-hour bus ride from Tauranga (where the Odyssey docked) to Auckland, where I spent a marathon 4 days reconnecting with some of my colleagues and their families. We had a lot of catching up to do!

No, not everyone in New Zealand is named Peter, it just happened that 3 of the 5 males in the group were!

Magda was a delightful 13-year-old teenager when I last saw her. Now she is a distinguished surgeon with teenagers of her own. A lot happens in 30+ years!

I thought doing an around-the-world cruise was the ultimate adventure, until I met Magda’s husband Kevin, a kiwi who trekked to the South Pole from the Antarctic coast.
