Reunion Marathon

Days 514-517: February 26 to March 1 – Auckland, New Zealand

I arrived in New Zealand in 1992 for a 2-year postdoc at the University of Auckland. It was easy to fall in love with this country, as well as with so many of the gracious, friendly people I got to know here. With Odyssey’s arrival in New Zealand, I had the opportunity to revisit my old stompin’ grounds. I hopped on a 4-hour bus ride from Tauranga (where the Odyssey docked) to Auckland, where I spent a marathon 4 days reconnecting with some of my colleagues and their families. We had a lot of catching up to do!

No, not everyone in New Zealand is named Peter, it just happened that 3 of the 5 males in the group were!

Magda was a delightful 13-year-old teenager when I last saw her. Now she is a distinguished surgeon with teenagers of her own. A lot happens in 30+ years!

I thought doing an around-the-world cruise was the ultimate adventure, until I met Magda’s husband Kevin, a kiwi who trekked to the South Pole from the Antarctic coast.

Hey there…Are you all safe? Probably safer than most but just need to know you are safe.

    1. Yes, we are all good. The ship had quite a bit of rocking and rolling for a couple days, but we’re all good now.

How wonderful to be able to meet like this 30 years later!

    1. Yes, it was quite the treat. When I left New Zealand, I did not anticipate being there again decades later.

  4. The people we love remain the people we love, in my experience. Also, I would prefer silence over Trump talk anyday

    1. Very true.
