Water Puppet Theater

Day 710: September 5, 2026 – Hanoi, Vietnam

Water puppetry is a traditional Vietnamese art form where puppets made of lacquered wood perform in a pool of water. Puppeteers, hidden behind a screen, control the puppets and make it look like the puppets are gliding across the water. The shows originated in flooded rice fields during the monsoon season and recreate village life and Vietnamese folktales.

Musical ensembles on both sides of the stage provide live background music and a narrative.
