Day 661-662: July 23-34, 2026 – Koh Chang, Thailand

In the small port of Koh Chang, I joined fellow birders Tim and Jimbo, plus novice birder Michelle, on an excursion deep into mangrove country. A winding boardwalk meanders through the mangroves and empties into a bay.

The birding wasn’t the best (not the right season for it), but I did manage the get one lifer, a Black-crested Bulbul (below). The forests were filled with other interesting creatures, including giant wasps, frogs, mud crabs, and mudskippers flopping around on shore.

To get an early start for birding, we spent the previous night on shore at the charming Spa Koh Chang Resort. Our room felt like a treehouse.

After a day of birding, it felt great to cool off in the infinity pool.

The restaurant menu featured traditional Thai cuisine with lots of fresh fruit and veggies.

Also on the menu were over 30 different kinds of cold-pressed juices, smoothies, and shakes, which hit the spot after a hot day of birding.
